Recreational Team

Those who are interested in our Recreational Team are welcome to attend a free tryout using the registration link below.

Meet the Coaches and other climbers, experience a typical practice session, and see if the team is right for you. Members of the Recreational Team who have shown interest, dedication, and ability may later be invited to join the Competitive team.

Competitive Team

Those who are interested in our Competitive Team are welcome to attend a free tryout using the registration link below.

Fall is the season for bouldering competition, and Spring is the season for sport climbing (i.e., rope climbing). Most team members look to join our team by early Fall and stay on through the Spring sport climbing season, but participants can join our teams anytime. Based on strength, technique, and climbing level, as well as consideration of the youth’s interest or lack of interest in competition, our coaches will place participants on the appropriate team.

Ages

We highly recommend that athletes are at least 8 years of age before considering a commitment to the team.

Meet the Team Coaches

John Villa, Head Coach

John is Sacramento born and raised. Since he was a kid, his dad instilled a love for the natural world in him. He loves to explore and keep active outside as much as he can manage to find time for! He’s always been drawn to physical activities from gymnastics, basketball, lacrosse or even just hard yard work, he loves using his body to its full potential. Finding climbing was his next step. Upon starting in 2016, he quickly became obsessed, filling any free time he had at the local climbing gym and eventually taking those skills to outdoor crags where he continues to push himself to this day.

Three years after starting his climbing journey, he decided that he wanted to share his knowledge and help create the same excitement he has for the sport. For the past 6 years he has been coaching and affiliated with the competitive climbing scene, and absolutely loves helping the next generation set and achieve their goals. One of his favorite aspects of climbing is having to grapple with inevitable failures and turning those experiences into moments of learning.

Isa Secor, Team Coach

Isa is from Orange County California and started climbing in 2021. She loves all things fitness; pickleball, jiu jitsu, hiking, but climbing is her favorite. In high-school, Isa was a rower which led to her love of fitness. Eventually, she found climbing through friends and the climbing gym became her second home.

After 2 years of climbing, she became a Routesetter and team coach at her gym to learn more and spread her passion for climbing to the kids she coached. She is a slab lover and loves bouldering and scrambling outside. She moved to Sacramento in 2025 and knew immediately The Boulder field was a community she wanted to be a part of.
